Thunda, as the dog is now known, was located in New Haven County in a picnic area in Derby with at least two gunshot wounds earlier this month, including one that shattered his front leg and another striking its shoulder.
In its latest update, members of the Derby Police Department said that Thunda “is doing much better” and even walking around after having his front left leg removed.
Officials said that the doctors have taken out his drains and the staples should be coming out by the end of the week.
Previously, Thunda had been under 24-hour care with the staff at VCA Shoreline veterinarians in Shelton.
“He is making improvements every day, eating on his own, and taking his medicine,” they said. “He has a long road ahead” but, according to their staff, “he is a fighter.”
It is unclear when Thunda will be available for fostering, law enforcement officials said, noting that there are legal concerns and technicalities making it trickier because it is a criminal case and an ongoing police investigation.
No arrests have been made in the case.
